Matlock is the County Town of Derbyshire, and sits in the centre of the county. It is a former Spa Town resting on the banks of the River Derwent. At one time there were over 20 spas in operation in the town. The man responsible for bringing hydrotherapy to Matlock and changing the face of the town was John Smedley. He built the ’Hydro’ which served as a spa up until the 1950’s when it was converted into offices to accommodate Derbyshire County Council. John was also responsible for the building of Riber Castle on the top of Mam Tor, the famous monument now in ruins overlooks the surrounding area. Other historical figures who left there mark on the town include Sir Richard Arkwright, who built the first successful water powered cotton mill down the road in Cromford.
